In short
Three things guidebooks still get wrong about Osaka in August 2026. The Expo 2025 site on Yumeshima is closed — a fenced construction site with nothing open. Zuboraya, the giant pufferfish lantern, closed permanently in 2020, both branches, and is still printed in guides. And street smoking is banned across the entire city, not just in a few marked zones.
Verified against city and operator sources, August 2026.

Kyoto asks you to be reverent. Tokyo asks you to be efficient. Osaka asks you whether you have eaten yet, and then tells you that you are wrong about where.
What is in this guide
This is the loudest, friendliest, least self-conscious of Japan’s big three, and it is currently the best value of them by a distance — rooms run around 40 per cent below Kyoto’s. It is also the city with the most out-of-date information floating around, because Expo 2025 came and went and a lot of the internet has not noticed.

Editor’s note
Osaka’s reputation as the cheap one after Kyoto is only half true in 2026. Hotels are genuinely cheaper. Food is genuinely cheaper. Attractions are not, and Universal Studios in particular can cost more in a single day than two nights of your room. We have flagged where the savings are real and where they are not.
Read this before you plan anything
| What | Reality in August 2026 |
|---|---|
| The Expo 2025 site on Yumeshima | Closed. A fenced construction site. Nothing to see, nothing open |
| Zuboraya, the giant pufferfish lantern | Closed permanently in 2020. Both branches. Still in guidebooks |
| Street smoking | Banned across the entire city since 27 Jan 2025. ¥1,000 fine, actively enforced |
| Kansai Thru Pass | Renamed Kansai Railway Pass Lite on 1 Apr 2026. No longer covers any buses |
| Abeno Harukas 300 | New prices from 23 July 2026: ¥2,200 at the door, ¥1,980 online |
| HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel | Reopened 22 April 2026 after a six-month shutdown |
| Osaka lodging tax | Not abolished — raised on 1 Sep 2025. See below |
| USJ ticket pricing | Changes on 1 Sep 2026 to a rising-price model. Book early |
That first line matters most. People are still flying in expecting to walk around the Expo site. You cannot. The pavilions were removed by April 2026, the Grand Roof Ring is being dismantled — about 200 metres will be preserved inside a future memorial park — and the whole area is behind hoardings until at least 2028. The Metro still runs there on a reduced timetable. There is nothing at the other end.
The lodging tax — smaller than Kyoto’s, but real
Levied by Osaka Prefecture, per person, per night, at check-out. It was raised on 1 September 2025 and the exemption threshold was lowered.
| Room price per person per night | Tax |
|---|---|
| Under ¥5,000 | ¥0 |
| ¥5,000 to ¥14,999 | ¥200 |
| ¥15,000 to ¥19,999 | ¥400 |
| ¥20,000 and above | ¥500 |
Compare that with Kyoto’s ceiling of ¥10,000 per person per night and you have a large part of the argument for basing here.
Note also: any bed under ¥5,000 per person pays nothing at all. Hostels and capsules are outside the tax entirely.
Getting around
Osaka is compact and the Midosuji Line does most of the work. It runs Shin-Osaka → Umeda → Shinsaibashi → Namba → Tennoji, which is essentially the spine of everything you came for.
| Option | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Metro single | ¥190 to ¥390 by distance | Fine for most days |
| Enjoy Eco Card (Metro + City Bus, 1 day) | ¥620 weekend/holiday, ¥820 weekday | Good value at weekends. Does not cover Yumeshima |
| Osaka Amazing Pass, 1 day | ¥3,500 | Transport plus ~40 free attractions. See below |
| Osaka Amazing Pass, 2 days | ¥5,000 | |
| Metro 26-hour / 48-hour digital ticket | ¥1,000 / ¥1,700 | Covers Yumeshima, if you must |
| Taxi | ¥600 first 1.2 km, then ¥100 per 231 m | +20% from 22:00 to 05:00 |
Is the Osaka Amazing Pass worth ¥3,500?
Usually yes, and unusually so — this is one of the few city passes in the world that genuinely pays.
| If you do this in one day | Normal price |
|---|---|
| Umeda Sky Building observatory | ¥2,000 |
| Tombori River Cruise | ¥2,000 |
| Osaka Castle keep | ¥1,200 |
| Tsutenkaku observation deck | ¥900 |
| Subtotal | ¥6,100 |
| Plus all your transport | — |
| Pass | ¥3,500 |
Four attractions and you are ahead by ¥2,600 before you have paid a single fare. The pass covers around 40 free entries plus discounts at roughly 50 restaurants and venues. If your day includes two or three paid sights, buy it.
The airport version at ¥3,800 (one day) or ¥5,400 (two days) adds the Osaka Monorail from Itami and some Hankyu sections.

Getting to Osaka
| From | Option | Fare | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kansai Airport (KIX) | Nankai Airport Express to Namba | ¥970 | 43–45 min |
| KIX | Nankai Rapi:t, ticketless | ¥1,520 | 34–39 min |
| KIX | Limousine bus to Namba | ¥1,400 | 48–59 min |
| KIX | JR Kansai Airport Rapid to Osaka Stn | ¥1,180 | 67–70 min |
| KIX | Haruka to Shin-Osaka, reserved | ¥3,070 | 50 min |
| Itami (ITM) | Monorail to Hotarugaike | ¥200 | 3 min, then Hankyu |
| Itami | Limousine bus to Umeda | ¥730 | 25–30 min |
| Kyoto | Hankyu from Kawaramachi | ¥410 | 43 min |
| Kyoto | JR Special Rapid | ¥580 | 29 min |
| Tokyo | Shinkansen Nozomi to Shin-Osaka | ¥14,720 | 2 h 24 |
The honest airport advice: the Nankai Airport Express at ¥970 gets you to Namba in about 44 minutes. The Rapi:t at ¥1,520 does it in 36. You are paying ¥550 to save eight minutes and get a nicer seat. Take the Express unless you are exhausted.
One 2026 change: Nankai raised its limited-express charges on 1 April 2026, the first increase in about thirty years. Buying ticketless is now cheaper than paper, and buying on board adds ¥300.
The districts
Minami — Namba, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi
The Osaka of the postcards. The Glico running man, the moving crab, the canal, and roughly nine hundred places to eat within a ten-minute walk.
Dotonbori is genuinely worth one evening and is genuinely a crush. Go at 19:00 for the neon and again at 09:00 the next morning if you want to photograph it without three hundred people in frame.
Shinsaibashi-suji, the covered shopping arcade running north, is 600 metres of shops and quieter than the canal. Amerikamura to the west is the young, scruffy, secondhand-clothing quarter.
Kita — Umeda
The business and shopping end, built vertically. Umeda Sky Building’s Floating Garden Observatory (¥2,000, open until 22:30) is the best paid view in the city — an open-air ring 170 metres up with an escalator crossing the void to reach it.
Umeda Station is famously confusing: it is four separate stations with four different names, connected by tunnels. Give yourself fifteen extra minutes the first time.
Shinsekai and Tennoji
Shinsekai was built in 1912 as a vision of the future and then more or less left alone, which makes it the most atmospheric scruffy corner of Osaka. Tsutenkaku Tower (¥900) is the centrepiece, and the streets around it are wall-to-wall kushikatsu.
Twenty minutes south, Abeno Harukas is Japan’s tallest building at 300 metres, with an observatory now priced at ¥2,200 at the door or ¥1,980 booked online since 23 July 2026.
Shitennoji, Japan’s oldest officially administered temple, founded in 593, is nearby: the central garan is ¥500, the outer grounds are free, and everything is free on the 21st and 22nd of each month.

Osaka Castle
The keep is a 1931 concrete reconstruction with a lift, which purists sniff at and which is nonetheless a good museum with a fine view. Admission is ¥1,200 since April 2025, when the new Toyotomi Stone Wall Museum was folded into the ticket — some sources still print ¥600, so check at the gate. Nishinomaru Garden next door is ¥300, ¥350 in cherry blossom season.
The park around it is free, large, and one of Osaka’s best cherry blossom spots.
Osaka Bay
Kaiyukan is one of the world’s largest aquariums, built around a whale shark tank you spiral down around. It uses dynamic pricing — expect roughly ¥3,200 to ¥3,500 for an adult — with timed entry tickets. Next door the Tempozan Ferris Wheel is ¥800.
Universal Studios Japan
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| 1-day, adult | ¥8,400 to ¥11,900 |
| 1-day, child (4–11) | ¥5,500 to ¥7,400 |
| 2-day, adult | ¥16,000 to ¥21,400 |
| Express Pass | ¥9,800 to ¥35,200+ |
| From Osaka Station | ¥200, 11–12 min via Nishikujo |
| From Kyoto | ¥840, ~54 min |
Important 2026 change: from 1 September 2026 USJ moves to a model where the price of a given date rises as it sells, starting from a lower ¥8,400 floor. Under the old system the price was fixed once released. Book as early as you can.
Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country both require a timed-entry ticket obtained free in the app once you are inside the park, or a lottery ticket once those run out, or a paid guaranteed-entry pass. Timed entry is usually gone before noon at weekends.
Eating in Osaka
The city’s nickname is *kuidaore* — roughly, “eat yourself bankrupt.” Take it as an instruction.
| Dish | Where it belongs |
|---|---|
| Takoyaki | Octopus in batter, molten inside. Aizuya invented it in 1933 and still operates |
| Okonomiyaki | Osaka style mixes everything into the batter. Mizuno in Dotonbori has been doing it since 1945 |
| Kushikatsu | Deep-fried skewers. Shinsekai is the home. Daruma has 16 branches |
| Kitsune udon | Osaka invented it. Soft noodles, sweet fried tofu |
| Kaiten sushi | Also invented here, in 1958, in Higashi-Osaka |
| Crab | Kani Doraku under the giant moving crab sign in Dotonbori |
Kuromon Ichiba Market is 150 shops along a 580-metre covered arcade. Fishmongers open around 05:00 to 06:00, most shops 09:00 to 17:00 or 18:00. Go between 07:30 and 09:30 for the working market with no crowds, or after 15:00 when prepared food gets discounted. Midday is a crush.
The one rule at Kuromon: eat at the stall you bought from. There is no law, but every stand has a standing counter for exactly this, and wandering off with a skewer is how you become the person everyone is quietly annoyed by.
The city-wide rule that does have a fine: smoking on the street is banned everywhere in Osaka since 27 January 2025, with a ¥1,000 penalty and over 122,000 issued so far. Use the designated smoking areas.

Where to stay
| Area | Suits | At night |
|---|---|---|
| Namba / Minami | Food and nightlife first | Loudest and latest. Some streets seedy after 23:00 |
| Umeda / Kita | First visits, day trips to Kyoto, Kobe, Nara | Big and bright, safer-feeling, restaurants run late |
| Shinsaibashi | Shopping with walkable nightlife | Arcade quiets after 21:00, Amerikamura stays up |
| Tennoji | Value, families, Harukas and Shitennoji | Fine and family-ish; Shinsekai is characterful but gritty |
| Shin-Osaka | Shinkansen arrivals, one-night stops | Functionally dead. Chains and convenience stores |
| Kyobashi | Budget repeat visitors, Keihan to Kyoto | Cheap, boisterous drinking quarter under the tracks |
| Bay / USJ | Families doing the park | Very quiet outside the gates |

Day trips
Osaka is the best base in Kansai for this — better than Kyoto, because it sits on more lines.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Osaka? Two is enough for the city itself. Three or four if you are adding USJ or using it as a base for Nara, Kobe and Himeji, which is what we would do.
Is Osaka cheaper than Kyoto and Tokyo? Yes, meaningfully. Rooms run roughly 40 per cent below Kyoto and 25 per cent below Tokyo, and the lodging tax tops out at ¥500 per person per night against Kyoto’s ¥10,000.
Can I visit the Expo 2025 site? No. Yumeshima is a fenced demolition and construction site with nothing open. A memorial park preserving part of the Grand Roof Ring is in design, with no announced opening date, and the site is not handed over until 2028.
Is the Osaka Amazing Pass worth it? If you visit two or three paid attractions in a day, yes. Umeda Sky, the Tombori cruise, Osaka Castle and Tsutenkaku alone come to ¥6,100 against the ¥3,500 pass, transport included.
Osaka or Kyoto as a base? Osaka for value, food, nightlife and day trips. Kyoto if temples are the reason you came and you intend to be at Fushimi Inari at 6:30. For a week, split your nights.
What food is Osaka known for? Takoyaki, okonomiyaki (mixed, not layered like Hiroshima’s), kushikatsu, kitsune udon and crab. Conveyor-belt sushi was invented here in 1958.
Can I smoke on the street in Osaka? No. It has been banned city-wide since January 2025 with a ¥1,000 fine, and enforcement is real. Use the marked smoking areas.
Is Universal Studios Japan worth a day? If you want Super Nintendo World, yes — but book the date early. From 1 September 2026 prices rise as a date fills, and area entry needs a free timed ticket obtained in the app on the day.
A note on our numbers
Fares, admissions and the tax bands were verified against operator, prefectural and city sources in August 2026, with effective dates noted. Where a figure is disputed between sources — Osaka Castle’s admission is one — we have said so rather than pick the one we prefer.

Where to book the things in this guide
Same price as going direct. We earn a small commission on ours, which funds the research.
| What | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Studios Japan | Klook | Frequently below gate price, and from 1 Sep 2026 USJ prices rise as a date fills — booking early genuinely saves money now |
| Attraction tickets — Kaiyukan, Umeda Sky, Tsutenkaku | Tiqets | Kaiyukan uses timed entry and dynamic pricing, so booking ahead is worth it |
| Day trips — Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Koyasan | KKday | Compare against doing it yourself first — see below |
| Kansai Airport transfer | Kiwitaxi | Code TPO5 = 5% off to 31 Dec 2026 |
| eSIM | Yesim | Set it up before you fly |
Three things we will talk you out of.
The Osaka Amazing Pass beats almost everything on this list. At ¥3,500 it covers Umeda Sky (¥2,000), the Tombori cruise (¥2,000), Osaka Castle (¥1,200) and Tsutenkaku (¥900) plus all your transport. Buy it at any Osaka Metro station. We earn nothing from it and it is still the right answer.
Nara, Kobe and Himeji do not need a tour. Kintetsu to Nara is ¥680 and 35 minutes; Hankyu to Kobe is ¥330. A guided day trip costs two to four times the independent price for journeys that are one train and a walk.
The Kansai Airport transfer usually loses. The Nankai Airport Express is ¥970 to Namba in 44 minutes. A private car only makes sense with a family and luggage.
