In short
Roughly €47 a day on a budget, €166 mid-range, €473 comfortable — per person, before the balloon. Then add the balloon once: €100–230 for a standard flight, €230–430 deluxe. Three days plus one balloon flight comes to about €241 / €678 / €1,749 on those three levels, with flights from Istanbul (€27–36 each way) on top. The balloon is about a third of a typical budget.
Prices checked August 2026; Türkiye’s accommodation tax is 1% until 31 December 2026.

Cappadocia has one line item that dominates everything else, and it is not the hotel. A balloon flight costs more than two nights in a good cave hotel, and it is the reason most people come.

Editor’s note
The Museum Pass Cappadocia is the trap on this page. At sixty-five euros it only pays off if you visit four or more Ministry sites. A typical three-day visitor sees two, spends about forty-eight euros at the gate, and loses money by buying the pass. Work out your own list before you buy it, not after.
The short answer
| Per person, per day | Budget | Mid-range | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed | €15 dorm | €90 cave hotel | €300 |
| Accommodation tax (1%) | €0.15 | €0.90 | €3 |
| Food | €15 | €35 | €80 |
| Local transport | €5 | €15 | €40 |
| Entries and activities | €12 | €25 | €50 |
| Per day | ≈ €47 | ≈ €166 | ≈ €473 |
Then add the balloon once: €100–230 standard, €230–430 deluxe, €1,600–4,500 for a private basket.
| Trip length | Budget | Mid-range | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days + balloon | €241 | €678 | €1,749 |
| 4 days + balloon | €288 | €844 | €2,222 |
| 5 days + balloon | €335 | €1,010 | €2,695 |
Getting there is extra: €27–36 each way by air from Istanbul, or €25–31 on the overnight bus.
The balloon, which is a third of your budget
| Product | Basket | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 16–28 people | ~60 min | €100–230 |
| Comfort | 12–16 | ~60 min | €160–330 |
| Deluxe | 6–8 | 75–90 min | €230–430 |
| Private | 2–8 | 60–90 min | €1,600–4,500 total |
By season, standard flight:
| Season | Price |
|---|---|
| January, early March, late November, December | €50–120 |
| Mid-March to mid-April, mid-November | €130–170 |
| July–August | €150–200 |
| May, June, September, October | €170–230 |
You will find listings at €67. They are real — large baskets, low season, or platform loss-leaders. The well-known operators sit at the top of each band and do not publish 2026 rate cards at all; you have to ask.
The cost nobody budgets for: the flight that does not happen. In 2026 the fleet flew on 90 of the first 181 days. If you have booked one night and one balloon morning, there is a real chance you pay for a hotel and fly home without flying. Budget three nights, not two. That extra night is cheaper than a second trip.
Accommodation
| Type | Per night |
|---|---|
| Hostel dorm, Göreme | €15–30 |
| Budget cave hotel | €40–80 |
| Mid-range cave hotel | €80–200 |
| Upper mid | €150–300 |
| Luxury | €200–700 |
By town: Avanos €25–100 (cheapest) · Göreme €15–350 (widest) · Çavuşin €30–120 · Ürgüp €70–400 · Uçhisar €60–500+.
The accommodation tax changed this year. It was 2%, is 1% from 1 May to 31 December 2026, and returns to 2% on 1 January 2027. It is a separate line on your invoice and covers meals and activities billed through the hotel, not just the room.
Getting there and around
| Route | Price |
|---|---|
| Istanbul → Kayseri (ASR) | from ₺1,477 (~€27) |
| Istanbul → Nevşehir (NAV) | from ₺1,971 (~€36) |
| Istanbul → Nevşehir, overnight bus | ₺1,400–1,730 (~€25–31), 9.5–10.5 h |
| ASR → Göreme, shared shuttle | €12 |
| ASR → Göreme, private van | €75 per vehicle |
| NAV → Göreme, airport bus | ₺300–500 (~€5–9) |
| NAV → Göreme, taxi | ~₺1,755 (~€32) |
| Dolmuş between villages | a few dozen lira per leg |
| Taxi Göreme–Ürgüp | ₺200–250 |
| Scooter, 24 hours | €41 |
| Car hire, per day | from ₺2,486 (~€45), 250 km/day, ₺4,000 deposit |
Kayseri is cheaper to fly into, Nevşehir is closer. ASR has three airlines and lower fares but sits 74 km out; NAV is 38 km away with two carriers. If the fare gap is under €15, take Nevşehir and save the transfer time.
The overnight bus is genuinely good value — €25–31, a proper reclining seat, and it saves a hotel night. It leaves Istanbul around 20:30 or just after midnight and arrives at dawn.

Entry fees
| Site | Price |
|---|---|
| Göreme Open Air Museum | €20 |
| Dark Church supplement | €6 |
| Zelve + Paşabağ combined | €12 |
| Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu underground city | €13 each |
| Ihlara Valley | €15 |
| Selime Monastery | €4 |
| Özkonak | €6 |
| Çavuşin, El Nazar, Mazı | €3 each |
| Uçhisar Castle | ₺320 (~€6) |
| Ortahisar Castle | ₺100 (~€2) |
| Rose, Red, Love, Pigeon, Devrent valleys | Free |
| Nevşehir Museum, Tatlarin, Açık Saray, Hacıbektaş | Free |
The Museum Pass arithmetic
€65 for three days. The Dark Church is excluded.
| Your itinerary | Cost separately | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Göreme + Kaymaklı + Derinkuyu + Zelve/Paşabağ + Ihlara | €73 | Pass wins by €8 |
| Göreme + one underground city + Ihlara | €48 | Pass loses by €17 |
| Göreme + Zelve/Paşabağ + one city + Ihlara | €60 | Pass loses by €5 |
It needs four ticketed Ministry sites in three days to pay. Most people do not clear that, and if your Green Tour includes the entries — most do — the pass definitely loses. Buy it only if you are touring independently and hard.
Activities
| Activity | Price |
|---|---|
| Green Tour (Ihlara, underground city, Selime) | €21–65 |
| Red Tour (Göreme north loop) | €38–65 |
| ATV, 2 hours | ₺1,400–1,800 per machine (two people per ATV) |
| ATV sunset | ₺1,500–2,000 per machine |
| Jeep safari | ₺4,450 |
| Horse riding, 2 hours | ₺1,750 |
| Sunrise ride under the balloons | ₺3,000 (~€54) |
| Turkish Night, no dinner | €38 |
| Turkish Night, with dinner | €44 |
| Pottery workshop, Avanos | ₺500 (~€9) |
Always ask whether tour prices include entry fees. A €21 Green Tour that excludes them is not cheaper than a €55 one that includes €32 of tickets. This is the most common way people overpay here.
Food
| Meal | Price |
|---|---|
| Simit and çay breakfast | ₺50–100 (~€1–2) |
| Hotel breakfast | usually included |
| Lentil soup and bread | ₺120–200 |
| Pide or lahmacun | ₺150–250 |
| Testi kebab (the local clay-pot dish) | ₺350–600 |
| Mid-range dinner with drinks | ₺700–1,200 (~€13–22) |
| Ürgüp wine tasting | €15–30 |
Turkey’s oldest wine region is here and almost nobody writes about it. Ürgüp is where to drink it.
Where the money leaks
| Leak | Cost | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Booking one balloon morning | The whole flight | Three nights, book the flight for morning one |
| Tour prices without entry fees | €30–35 | Ask before booking, every time |
| Buying the Museum Pass without doing the maths | €17 | Four Ministry sites minimum |
| The Red Tour | €38–65 | Everything on it is within scooter range of Göreme |
| Doing both underground cities | €13 | They are the same idea twice |
| Private airport transfer alone | €63 | The shared shuttle is €12 |
| A “skip the line” ticket | Varies | There are no lines here worth skipping |
Three real budgets

Frugal — €241 for three days plus a low-season balloon
Hostel dorm at €15, simit breakfasts, lentil soup lunches, one proper dinner. Walk the free valleys, pay for Göreme Open Air Museum and one underground city. Overnight bus in and out. Balloon in February at €100 — and accept you may not fly.
Mid-range — €678 for three days plus a shoulder-season balloon
Cave hotel at €90 with a valley terrace, a €180 balloon flight, the Green Tour with entries included, a scooter day, testi kebab dinners, flights to Kayseri. This is the version most people should budget for.
Comfortable — €1,749 for three days plus deluxe balloon
Uçhisar or Ürgüp luxury cave suite, a €330 six-person deluxe basket, private transfers, a car, Ürgüp wine dinners. The flight is the only line where the money buys a different experience rather than a nicer version of the same one.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a trip to Cappadocia cost? About €241 per person for three days on a budget, €678 mid-range, €1,749 comfortable — including one balloon flight and accommodation, excluding flights to the region.
How much is a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia in 2026? €100–230 for a standard flight depending on season, €160–330 comfort, €230–430 deluxe, €1,600–4,500 for a private basket. May, June, September and October are the most expensive months.
Is Cappadocia expensive? Not by European standards once the balloon is paid for. A mid-range day without the flight is about €166 including a cave hotel. The balloon is roughly a third of a typical three-day budget on its own.
Is the Museum Pass Cappadocia worth €65? Only if you visit four or more Ministry sites in three days. Göreme plus one underground city plus Ihlara comes to €48 — you lose €17. Check what your tour already includes.
What is the cheapest way to get to Cappadocia? The overnight bus from Istanbul at ₺1,400–1,730 (€25–31), which also saves a hotel night. Flying to Kayseri from ₺1,477 (~€27) is barely more and much faster.
How much should I budget for food? €15 a day eating simply — simit, soup, pide — €35 mid-range with a proper dinner, €80 eating well twice a day. A testi kebab, the local speciality, is ₺350–600.
Do I need to tip in Turkey? 10 per cent in restaurants is normal and appreciated. Note that a service charge or cover charge has been banned since January 2026, so what you see is what you pay.
What is free in Cappadocia? Rose, Red, Love, Pigeon and Devrent valleys, including the cave churches inside Rose Valley. Also Nevşehir Museum, Tatlarin underground city, Açık Saray and the Hacıbektaş museums. You could fill two good days without an entry fee.
A note on our numbers
Prices, tax rates, fares and balloon statistics were checked against Turkish government, regulator, operator and booking-platform sources in August 2026, with exchange rates from the Central Bank of Türkiye. Balloon flight-day figures come from the Cappadocia Area Directorate rather than operator marketing. The museum tariff is the official euro list, which 2026 sources reproduce unchanged — verify at the gate. Daily totals are our own arithmetic on those components, broken out line by line so you can adjust any of them.

Where these costs get booked
Same price as direct. We earn a small commission on our links, which funds the price-checking.
| Line in your budget | Where | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Balloon flight — the big one | Klook · KKday | Compare platform against direct. Platforms are often cheaper; direct usually refunds faster when the fleet is grounded |
| Green Tour | Klook | The one tour worth the money. Confirm entries are included — that is €32 of value |
| Airport transfer | Kiwitaxi | Three or more people only. Code TPO5 = 5% off to 31 Dec 2026 |
| eSIM | Yesim | Cheaper than a Turkish airport SIM counter |
| Site tickets | Tiqets | Peak season only |
The five biggest savings in this article earn us nothing. We would rather be straight about that:
- Book three nights, not two. The fleet flew 90 of 181 days in 2026. A €90 extra night beats a €180 flight you never took.
- Skip the Red Tour — €38–65 for places within €41-a-day scooter range.
- Take the €12 shared shuttle instead of a €63–75 private car.
- Do the Museum Pass maths — it loses €17 on a typical itinerary.
- Walk the valleys. Rose, Red, Love, Pigeon and Devrent are free, including the cave churches, and they are the best hours you will spend here.
Two people, four nights: a worked total
Daily figures are hard to act on. This is one specific mid-range trip priced line by line, for two people sharing, flying from Istanbul.
| Line | Cost for two |
|---|---|
| Return flights Istanbul–Kayseri | €108 |
| Airport shuttle, both ways, shared | €48 |
| Cave hotel, 4 nights at €90 | €360 |
| Accommodation tax at 1% | €3.60 |
| Balloon flights ×2, shoulder season | €360 |
| Green Tour ×2, entries included | €110 |
| Scooter, 1 day | €41 |
| Entries: Göreme + Dark Church + Zelve/Paşabağ + Uçhisar ×2 | €88 |
| Pottery workshop ×2 | €18 |
| Sunrise horse ride ×2 | €108 |
| Food, 4 days ×2 | €280 |
| Dolmuş, taxis, incidentals | €60 |
| Total for two | ≈ €1,585 |
| Per person | ≈ €792 |
Where the money goes: the balloon is 23 per cent of the trip, accommodation 23 per cent, food 18 per cent, and flights 7 per cent. That balloon share is unusually high for any destination and it is why the “will it fly” question matters more here than anywhere else we write about.
Four ways to cut this by €400
- Go in February instead of May. Balloons drop to €50–120, hotels roughly halve. Saves €400 or more for two — but you will probably not fly, so it is only sensible if you can stay a week.
- Take the overnight bus both ways. €25–31 each way instead of €54, and it saves two hotel nights. Saves about €150 for two.
- Stay in Avanos instead of Göreme. €25–100 versus €15–350, and a 20-minute transfer. Saves €100–150 over four nights.
- Skip the Green Tour, rent a car for one day. €45 for the car against €110 for two tour seats — but you then pay €56 in entries yourself, so it is close to a wash. Only do it if you want the schedule freedom.
And one way to spend €150 well: upgrade from a 24-person standard basket to a 6–8 person deluxe. It is the only line on this page where the extra money genuinely buys a different experience rather than a nicer version of the same one.
The single most expensive mistake
Booking two nights and one balloon morning.
| Scenario | Cost | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 2 nights, 1 balloon morning, May | €180 hotel + €180 flight | 45% chance you never fly |
| 3 nights, 3 balloon chances, May | €270 hotel + €180 flight | 91% chance you fly |
The extra night costs €90. Not flying costs you the entire reason you came, plus a return trip. We cannot make this point strongly enough, and we earn nothing by making it.
Before you book
Two bookings shape this budget more than anything else. Flights into Kayseri or Nevsehir, where the difference between the two airports is often larger than the difference between hotels. And, if you would rather see the valleys on your own schedule than on a minibus, a hire car works out cheaper than two guided tours for a group of three or four.
