Albania Travel Guide 2026: Visas, Currency and the New Airport That Isn’t Open Yet

US citizens can visit Albania visa-free for up to one year under a bilateral agreement, while UK citizens get the more standard 90 days within any 180-day period — a bigger gap between the two nationalities than most neighboring countries. One planning note worth catching early: despite plans for a summer 2026 opening, Vlorë International Airport — meant to be the new gateway to the Albanian Riviera — still had no scheduled passenger flights as of July 2026. Tirana remains the only realistic air entry point for now.

Visa rules for US and UK citizens

Under a 2022 bilateral agreement, US citizens can stay in Albania visa-free for up to a full year (365 days) — unusually generous, and more than most European countries offer. UK citizens get the more standard allowance: up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, a separate framework from Schengen rules since Brexit. Both nationalities need a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond their departure date, and no advance registration or e-visa is required for tourism. One practical wrinkle for Americans: border officers sometimes default to stamping a 90-day entry even though the bilateral deal allows a full year, so travelers planning a long stay should be ready to reference the agreement at the border if needed.

The Vlorë airport situation

Vlorë International Airport was built to shorten the trip to the Albanian Riviera — at roughly 75km from Himarë, it would cut hours off the drive from Tirana (about 230km from Himarë). It was meant to open for commercial flights in summer 2026, but as of July 2026 it still has no scheduled passenger service: Chair Airlines cancelled its planned Zurich-Vlorë route and redirected it to Ohrid instead, and a Nordic charter program was also scrapped, reportedly amid an unresolved shareholder dispute. For now, Tirana International Airport — with 50+ destinations and multiple budget carriers — remains the only realistic way to fly into Albania. Check current status before assuming Vlorë is operational; this guide will update once that changes.

Currency and tourist tax

Albania’s currency is the lek (ALL). Cards are accepted in Tirana and larger coastal towns, but cash is still useful for furgons (shared minibuses), small guesthouses, and rural areas. A per-person, per-night tourist tax applies at accommodation: Tirana charges roughly ALL 140 per night for standard stays (rising to ALL 350 for 4-5 star hotels), while other municipalities range from about ALL 35 to 350 depending on location and category — it’s charged to guests and collected by the accommodation.

Who writes this

Globe Guide Hub is written and edited by Engin, who has travelled in every destination this site covers. The guides exist because published advice about these places is routinely a year or two out of date.

Every price, opening time and rule here is checked against a primary source — a government page, an operator’s own tariff, a meteorological record — and dated in the text. Where something could not be verified, we say so instead of guessing. More on how we work in our editorial standards, including our corrections record.
