Matka Canyon

Matka Canyon is an easy half-day trip from Skopje — about 15km, 30 minutes by bus #60 or taxi. Entry to the canyon is free; a boat tour to Vrelo Cave (which has no land access) costs roughly 200-500 MKD per person for about an hour on the water. For hiking, a flat cliffside path along the river takes 30-40 minutes, while a steeper 30-minute climb leads to St. Nikola Šiševski Monastery and panoramic canyon views. Kayak rental runs 300-500 MKD if you’d rather explore the lake yourself.

Mavrovo National Park

Mavrovo is a proper day trip or overnight destination: about 75km/50 minutes from Skopje to Gostivar on the highway, then a further 50km/50 minutes on a scenic mountain road to Mavrovo Lake — roughly 1 hour 50 minutes total. The artificial lake sits at 1,200m elevation with a flat 4km walking path around the shore, and at low water you can sometimes see the bell tower of Sveta Bogorodica, a 17th-century chapel partially submerged when the lake was created in 1953.

In winter (December-March, weather permitting), Mavrovski Ski Center offers day lift passes for €25 (adults) or €15 (children), with ski/boot rental at €15/day or snowboard rental at €10/day. In summer, hikers tackle Mount Korab (2,764m, North Macedonia’s highest peak, straddling the Albanian border) — a serious 7-8 hour round trip with 1,400m of elevation gain — or the easier Radika River Walk, a 5km, roughly 1.5-hour shaded path past traditional water mills.

Who writes this

Globe Guide Hub is written and edited by Engin, who has travelled in every destination this site covers. The guides exist because published advice about these places is routinely a year or two out of date.

Every price, opening time and rule here is checked against a primary source — a government page, an operator’s own tariff, a meteorological record — and dated in the text. Where something could not be verified, we say so instead of guessing. More on how we work in our editorial standards, including our corrections record.
